So you braved the beautiful weather, carefully selected the best berries in the field, took some pictures, sampled the goods, and are on your way home with the berries. What do you do next? Whatever your plans, remember that fresh strawberries are very perishable. If you are not eating them right out of the bucket, they can be kept cool on the counter for an hour or two, then they should go in the fridge. My preferred method is to cut the stems off and put in a bowl for rapid consumption throughout the day. They can stay in the fridge for 2-3 days, but keep an eye out for any rogue bad ones. I suggest using them throughout the day: sliced on your cereal for breakfast, on your summer salad for lunch, and with shortbread and Woodside Farms Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert. If you plan to freeze them, cut off the stems and arrange in a single layer on a cookie sheet and put in the freezer. When solid, put them in a zip-loc for use throughout the year.
Fresh, local berries don't stick around long, so enjoy them while they last!
